Lionsgate announced today that it will launch its multi-picture partnership with Crest Animation Productions with the CGI animated theatrical family film Alpha and Omega. Lionsgate and Crest are co-financing and co-producing Alpha and Omega, which is scheduled for theatrical release in 2010. The announcement was made by Lionsgate's Executive Vice President of Lionsgate Family Entertainment Ken Katsumoto and Crest Animation Production's CEO Noah Fogelson.
The story of two very different young wolves thrown together by circumstance, Alpha and Omega features Justin Long and Hayden Panettiere ("Heroes") in the primary roles. The eclectic cast includes Christina Ricci, Danny Glover, Dennis Hopper and Larry Miller. The film is directed by Anthony Bell (The Boondocks, Rugrats) and Ben Gluck (Brother Bear 2). Chris Denk wrote the screenplay based on an original story by Steve Moore (co-creator of Open Season). Ken Katsumoto is producing for Lionsgate, and Richard Rich is producing for Crest. The executive producers are Noah Fogelson, CEO of Crest Animation Productions, Seemha Ramanna, Managing Director and co-founder of Crest Animation Studios, and A.K. Madhavan, CEO of Crest Animation Studios.
"We are very excited to be working with Crest, one of the world's finest CG animation producers. Everyone at Crest is passionate about creating high-quality animated family entertainment, and that commitment is reflected in 'Alpha and Omega,'" said Katsumoto. "This is a classic journey film in the vein of 'Finding Nemo' and 'The Lion King,' filled with all manner of richly imagined particulars. And why not begin a partnership with a movie about wolves, one of Nature's most cohesive social units?"
Said Fogelson,
"We are thrilled to be in business with Lionsgate, a company that is continually innovating in terms of both production and marketing. We are looking forward to a fruitful collaboration and feel we are off to a great start with 'Alpha and Omega.' We have a wonderfully talented cast and an outstanding team of filmmakers led by Anthony Bell and Ben Gluck, who truly understand the art and craft of animated storytelling."
Alpha and Omega is currently in production, with pre and post-production taking place in Los Angeles and key animation at Crest Animation Studios in India. Lionsgate will distribute the film in North America and the UK. Mandate International will be launching international sales at the upcoming Cannes film festival for the rest of the world, excluding India.
In the film, two bickering wolves -- one a disciplined, Alpha-bred wolf (Panettiere) and the other a fun-loving, comical Omega wolf (Long) -- are captured and taken thousands of miles from their home. Determined to rejoin their pack, the two mismatched wolves begin a dangerous trek across unfamiliar terrain, battling the odds, the elements, the bears and one another -- and finding love along the way.
Don't change clothes at Hayden Panettiere's house!
Britney Spears isn't the only one with pesky paparazzi problems.
Just ask Hayden Panettiere's baby brother.
"It's bad. There are actually places in our house where you can't safely change clothes because of the paparazzi hiding outside," said Jansen Panettiere, 13, who says there are cameras and videos aimed at their house day and night.
What, they don't have blinds or drapes?
But I can see his point. Who wants to live like that?
"I think it's fine for them to take your picture when you're out in public, at an event or just out at a store," Jansen said at the "Nim's Island" premiere. "That's fair. But when you're in your own home? That's just wrong."
But he also says there's a light at the end of the lens.
"It should get better shortly because Hayden is buying her own house and will be moving in soon."
And since we're on the subject of paparazzi and gossip, does he have a girlfriend?
Fox Atomic is acquiring the novel "Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List" and will develop it as a star vehicle for "Heroes" star Hayden Panettiere. Amy Andelson and Emily Meyer will write the script.
Alexandra Milchan, Lesley Vogel and Emily Gerson-Saines produce.
Novel is the latest by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, whose past title, "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," has been turned into a Mandate Pictures and Sony comedy starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings.
Published last year by Knopf, "Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List" takes place in Manhattan, where Naomi and her gay best friend Ely protect their soulmate friendship by creating a list of people deemed off limits for smooching. Their friendship is imperiled when Ely kisses Naomi's boyfriend.
Panettiere is currently playing the title role in the Chris Columbus-directed Fox Atomic comedy "I Love You, Beth Cooper," and she is also planning to star in "Daydream Nation," which Vogel and Gerson-Saines will produce. In addition, Panettiere is recording an album for Hollywood Records, with the first single, "Wake Up Call," set for release in the fall.

Brother of Hayden Panettiere Digs Milo Ventimiglia
Hayden Panettiere and young Jansen Panettiere are both actors!
As you surely know, Hayden Panettiere, 18, and Milo Ventimiglia, 30, have been dating since last year, following a long string of denials that they were dating.
Ventimiglia had a crush on his Heroes co-star since she back when she was dating reality star and VJ Stephen Colletti. That ended last summer sometime.
Milo confessed it “the minute she broke up with Stephen,” a source said.
A source close to the actor shrugged off their 12-year-age gap between the two hotties, saying, “[Hayden] is really like a 30-year-old.

Hayden Panettiere Awarded For Efforts to Save Dolphins
Heroes star Hayden Panettiere cried Saturday night as the Humane Society gave her an activism award for protesting the annual dolphin slaughter in Southwestern Japan last year.
Hayden received the Gretchen Wyler Award, given annually at the Genesis Awards to a celebrity who brings attention to animal causes. Wyler, who founded the awards and was also an actress, died last May from breast cancer, two months after presenting the first award to Paul McCartney.
Hayden’s parents and her boyfriend – and Heroes costar – Milo Ventimiglia were in the audience and watched a video of the actress and others paddling out on surfboards and confronting fishermen, who trap and kill dolphins to protect their fish supply. They then gave a standing ovation as Hayden took the stage.
"As an actress, you always dream of getting awards like the Golden Globe award, but I never expected to get an award that is this special and important to me as this," Hayden said through tears. "There are people who dedicate their entire lives to preserving the environment and defending animals, they are so much more deserving of something like this."
After the brief speech, she went straight from the stage to the bathroom for several minutes to regain her composure, and then was escorted back to her seat by Ventimiglia.
Hayden skipped the afterparty, having to return in the morning to shooting the movie I Love You, Beth Cooper. Panettiere stars in the Chris Columbus comedy, being shot in Vancouver.
"She’s an inspiring example to her generation, using her compassion, courage and celebrity to help animals in a very effective way,” said Beverly Kaskey, Senior Director of the Humane Society’s Hollywood Office.
Other celebrity attendees included Emily Deschanel, Eric Roberts, Bill Maher and Anderson Cooper.

After making a quick appearance at the Kids’ Choice Awards, Hayden Panettiere was honored at the 2008 Genesis Awards on Saturday night in Beverly Hills. (The event was produced by The Hollywood Office of the Humane Society of the United States.)
The Genesis Awards honors the news and entertainment media for showcasing animal protection issues. Hayden was honored with The Wyler Award for drawing worldwide attention to the cruelty of Japan’s whale and dolphin slaughter. The award, given to a celebrity who has made news on behalf of animals, is named after Genesis Awards founder Gretchen Wyler, the former Broadway headliner and animal activist, who died last year.
Said Beverly Kaskey, Senior Director of The Hollywood Office of The Humane Society of the United States: “We feel Hayden is a very worthy successor to Sir Paul McCartney, last year’s Wyler Award recipient. She’s an inspiring example to her generation, using her compassion, courage and celebrity to help animals in a very effective way.”
