Hayden Panettiere: The Heroes star is leading a far from ordinary teenage life
In the hit TV show Heroes she has special powers - but in reality Hayden Panettiere is just an ordinary teenager, right? Far from it, finds Kaleem Aftab
Hayden Panettiere is the poster girl of hit television show Heroes. The plot of the series about ordinary people who suddenly discover they've got superpowers could almost work as a metaphor for the life of the 18-year-old. Overnight she was thrown into the global limelight by the phenomenal success of the show. Every word and action of this girl from upstate New York became newsworthy, including her wardrobe, the men on her arm and, perhaps more surprisingly, her politics...

On the Vancouver set of her new comedy film "I Love You Beth Cooper", Hayden Panettiere, all glammed up for a party scene in a hot, curve-hugging strapless dress, put on a parka, braved a cold Vancouver rainstorm at North Shore studios to run across the lot and give us this little tidbit on the new "Heroes" season.
"I'm very excited to get back to "Heroes" in May and see all my castmates. Oh my Gosh! I just read the first episode. It is phenomenal. It is so good. I think it's better than the pilot of the first season. It's back to that action. It's action, action, action. It's crazy. I can't say that much about it but it's really exciting. The first episode is packed with cliff hangers and cool stuff! You read it and you go, 'they've figured out how to do it! They've figured out how to go back to the first season to make it even more exciting and entertaining. They've learned the concoction to make it great!"
Q: Did Tim Krane write it?
"All the writers write it and give revisions, but I'm sure Tim wrote the majority of the first one."
Aside from liking bad boys, the petite Heroes actress confessed another boy problem — difficulty in keeping one! LOL! Hayden Panettiere revealed,
“I used to have a problem with keeping one boy. It’s hard and I feel bad. I usually say, ‘I can’t guarantee anything, I don’t know how long I’ll be here.’ I’m just having fun.”
Is Hayden a commitment-phobe or what?? And I wonder what Milo Ventimiglia has to say about it! Maybe he “reformed” the 18-year old actress eh? =) Anyway, the “I Love You, Beth Cooper” star further confessed,
“I almost try to save them [guys wooing her] from themselves. But I give a warning, I say, ‘going out with me will be really bad.’ I do have a boyfriend though so I’m not looking, and I’m trying not to talk about him.”
She’s 18 years old and has been in the Hollywood business for more than a decade. But unlike other child stars (think Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan), Hayden Panettiere managed to stay squeaky clean. Her secret? I personally feel it’s because of her love for sports. You know what they say– if you’re an athlete, you are more likely to love your body and say no to partying, drugs and drinking. Hayden Panettiere revealed,
“I was a big athlete when I was younger. I was a gymnast and a swimmer for years - softball, volleyball, basketball.”
And so despite being in Hollywood for the longest time, Hayden Panettiere was able to say no to the bad lifestyle that goes with it. She’s not into sports much these days but the discipline she got with it remained — she parties hard but never to the point of unhealthiness. Hayden shares,
“Of course, I like to go out and have fun but I would never go out and do something stupid. I’m a safe person. There are certain things I would never do to put myself in jeopardy as I don’t think it’s worth risking my life and not being able to have any of the other amazing experiences you’re supposed to have. A lot of the times, people just want to try this or that and do it once. But one time you don’t make it then you won’t be able to experience any of the really important things in life. So, frankly, it’s not worth it.”
AS sexy cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes, Hayden Panettiere helped to save the world from a nuclear catastrophe.
But the 18-year-old actress is proving she’s a real-life Hero too.
She’s an animal rights activist and last year a warrant was issued for her arrest in Japan when she took part in an demo that almost got her killed.
Brave Hayden was among 30 protesters who paddled on surfboards to try to block the massacre of dolphins by Japanese fishermen.
Pictures of her sobbing on the beach were beamed around the world.
Yet far from being embarrassed, she says it has thrown a spotlight on the savage trade.
And joining us for a chat as we welcome back the new series of the sci-fi hit which started this week, the pint-sized blonde says she will continue to use her new-found fame as a weapon “against evil in the world”.
Since hitting the big time in the BBC2 show, Hayden has travelled the world urging diplomats to end the brutal whale trade.?
She even took on the Japanese ambassador at a political meeting in Washington DC.

She says:
“I recently spent four days in Washington visiting the embassies of Japan, Norway and Iceland – the whaling nations.
“I spoke to the foreign minister of Japan who welcomed me back. I think they must have lifted the arrest warrant because I was allowed at the embassy.
“That would have been interesting – locked in a jail cell below the embassy in DC!”
And don’t let her size fool you. Hayden, despite being so young, is not afraid to take on the toughest politicians in the world. And she admits she was surprised about how nice they were to her.
She says with a laugh:
“The Japanese ambassador was so polite. He said: ‘You are the most welcomed guest I’ve ever had.’ I was like: ‘S**t, really?’”
In between trying to save the world, she filmed the second series of Heroes (if you missed Thursday’s opener you can catch the repeat tomorrow).
It starts four months from where we left off and Hayden says there is plenty more guts and gore in store for her fiery alter ego, whose body can regenerate.
And a couple of newcomers – notably Kristen Bell, 26, who will play a character called Elle – are set to spice things up.
“Claire’s back with the Bennets,” she explains.?“But they are no longer the real Bennets. They are something else, but I’m not going to tell you what!
“Claire is just trying to make that transition. The first season was about what happened when ordinary people discover extraordinary abilities.
“This season it’s about what happens when those extraordinary people try to be ordinary.
“The problem is she’s become so used to her abilities that now she wants to know what her pain tolerance is and if her limbs will always grow back!
“Trust me, you’ll see plenty of blood. Plenty of snaps, crackles, and pops!”
Hayden Panettiere has admitted that she doesn't live the life of a normal teenage girl.
The actress said that appearing in Heroes has severely altered her lifestyle, claiming she couldn't remember the last time she bought a cup of coffee.
Panettiere told Grazia: "Do I have time to be a normal teenager? Absolutely. Am I a normal teenager? Absolutely not.
"It impacts on your life incredibly. Even walking down the street - I can't remember the last time I walked around the corner to get coffee."
The TV star also defended former teenage sensation Britney Spears, arguing that the media "built her up" before knocking her down.
She commented: "No one gave Britney enough room to heal. She was the epitome of beauty. She was everything to every teenage girl when I was growing up. And we built her up and ripped her down."
In a desperate attempt to ditch the all-American blonde cheerleader image, Heroes star Hayden Panettiere has signed up to play a brunette in a new movie.
The 18-year-old beauty, who plays a fair-haired cheerleader Claire Bennett in the hit sci-fi TV series, recently completed filming Fireflies In The Garden about a dysfunctional family in which a dark-haired Panettiere stars opposite Julia Roberts.
And she is hoping the dramatic role and darker locks will be enough to convince audiences of her versatility.
She says: "I wanted to kill the cheerleader image, so I changed my hair colour and wore no make-up.
"It's been very hard for me in the past to have people see me in any other way. They can be very narrow-minded."
Teen actress Hayden Panettiere is set to follow in the footsteps of former U.S.
vice president Al Gore - by releasing a film modelled after his Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth.
The Heroes star, 18, made waves last November when she took part in a protest against the slaughtering of dolphins in the historic whaling town of Taiji, Japan - resulting in local authorities issuing a warrant for her arrest.
Since then, she has further championed the cause by lending her name to the Save The Whales Again! campaign and heading to Washington D.C. to confront the Japanese, Icelandic and Norwegian embassies about their hunting practices.
Now one of her main priorities is an informative movie about the whaling industry, which she is convinced will be as groundbreaking as Gore’s global warming expose.
She tells British magazine Grazia, "It’s going to be the Inconvenient Truth of the oceans."
Hayden Panettiere is hot 5. in the 100 sexiest women in the world 2008! They wrote about her:
Up, up and away
“In an age of conflict… in a world of uncertainty… a hero will arise.” TV trailers tell us this, but they didn’t say she’d be a button-cute 18-year-old New Yorker who’d debut in FHM’s very pages.
Hayden Panettiere is back with another blog for all her fans:
“Hey everyone! I’m in Vancouver right now filming a movie for Fox called, I Love You Beth Cooper. I’m having a blast filming and everyone is so nice. Chris Columbus is a wonderful director and one of my favorites so far. It’s very cool because I get to work with a lot of young people in this film and because it’s a comedy we get to be goofy all the time! I’m very excited to get back to Heroes in May and see all my cast mates. I also just received the script for episode one and let me tell you, it’s great! Heroes is back to the action and adventure that went on in the first season and even the first episode is packed with cliff hangers and lots of cool stuff! Hope all is well, thanks for checking out the site! Hayden”
